Title: This Charming Man
Pairing: Thomas/Humphrey's Head
Rating: T (For Language)
Wordcount: 6,597 words
Genre: Humor & Romance
Main Characters: Thomas, Humphrey, Alison
POV: Humphrey's Head (3rd Person Limited)
Summary: Thomas begins to seek out Humphrey's head, making less sense than usual. What exactly is Humphrey doing to make Thomas react so strangely to seemingly innocuous statements?
Hopefully he can find out what's going on after a little help from Alison and a CD player.
Author's Commentary: A slightly crack-y fic set just after the end of Season 4, because I didn’t want to deal with writing Alison being pregnant. (This is a theme in my fic for this fandom.)
Basically, Humphrey is minding his business as usual, just trying to get a ride throughout the house. After what he thinks is an uneventful conversation with Thomas, he ends up getting accosted by the poet, who becomes convinced the pair are soulmates after Humphrey accidentally quotes This Charming Man by The Smiths. Yeah. I know. What a concept. There’s a reason this is tagged Crack Treated Seriously over on Ao3.
Technically a songfic, although I don't actually think this song fits them--- However, Thomas is absolutely the kind of person to force any song he likes to be about himself and his beloved, so who can say.
This was the first Ghosts fic I ever wrote! I might have made slightly different characterization choices if I wrote it today, but I still really like it.
Excerpt:
"You were very lucky to have passed over as quickly as you did--- The same cannot be said for--- ...Me? I. The same cannot be said for I," said Thomas. Humphrey's eyelids lowered at his verbal workshopping with something that was not quite unlike fondness. "Such a long time... Sitting there, bleeding," he added, with disdain.
"Well, sure. It's a bit gruesome, but, hey--- I mean, just look at me---" Humphrey would have gestured to himself if he had hands to do so, but instead rolled his eyes around meaningfully to compensate. "...We're all our fair share of gruesome around here, so don't let it bother you much. Be glad you still have a handsome face intact."
Thomas' eyes went wide, face pulled into an almost manic expression. "It's... Gruesome, is it not? That someone--- So handsome, such as myself--- Should... Care. Would you truly say so?"
"...I suppose?" Humphrey offered slowly, unsure what he had said to elicit such a strong reaction.
"My god," Thomas said breathlessly, and seemed to scan Humphrey's face with his eyes for a flash before turning on his heel and walking away briskly, hands drawn up to his chest. "But I haven't got a stitch... To wear." Humphrey heard him mutter quietly to himself as he disappeared around a corner. "This man said, it's gruesome..."
"Hey!" Humphrey called after him, "At least take me with you!" He only heard Thomas' steps getting farther and farther away, and groaned irritably. "Fine," he sighed. After a few seconds, the world began to lean over onto its side once more, and he braced himself for the fall before he tipped down onto his ear again.
